Rio Tinto reveals no structural damage found to Aboriginal rock shelter disturbed by blasting near Tom Price

Rio Tinto has dodged a cultural heritage bullet, reporting no major damage to an ancient Aboriginal rock shelter disturbed by mine site blasting. The mining giant had been holding its breath since August 6, when drone footage showed damage to the 40,000 to 50,000-year-old site near Tom Price. A tree near the lip of the shelter collapsed during the detonation and a large boulder was dislodged, rolling down the side of the entrance to the cave. The shelter was 150m from the blast zone and had been flagged by traditional owners, the Muntulgura Guruma people, as an important area. Senior Rio executive Cecile Thaxter on Monday said a weekend inspection of the site near the Nammuldi mine, 60km from Tom Price, revealed no further damage. “Yesterday, representatives from the Muntulgura Guruma people and Rio Tinto visited the rock shelter,” said Ms Thaxter, who is the company’s vice president for health, safety, environment and communities. “Assessments found no structural damage to the rock shelter itself, and no damage to cultural materials. We will continue to work closely with the Muntulgura Guruma people.” Pictures of the shelter taken before the explosion at Nammuldi suggested its lip was already starting to collapse, with several large rocks obscuring the entrance. The miner stopped blasting in parts of the mine close to the shelter while it waited for the physical site inspection. Rio’s post-Juukan protocols dictate that any blasting within 350m of an area of heritage interest attracts special scrutiny. Detonations are banned within 70m of a site. The company aims to ensure vibrations at a registered landmark are no more violent than those from natural phenomena such as strong rainstorms. “This incident represents the first time we have detected a disturbance of this nature from the 1800-plus controlled blasts undertaken in the past three years to protect cultural heritage sites,” Ms Thaxter said. “Our practices have been built on robust analyses and constraints.”
