Margaret River Business Network champions region in chance to feature in Monopoly special edition
Margaret River is set to feature in its own version of popular board game Monopoly.
Instead of players vying for utility companies and who gets to buy Park Lane first, the Times understands the finalised version would include some of the region’s best-known wineries and businesses in prime real estate.
Margaret River Business Network chief executive Annie McFie said the initiative — which came as an invitation from producers Hasbro directly — was a fun way to promote the region and its diverse offerings on the national stage as a souvenir for those who love it as much as the people who live here.
“The Monopoly Margaret River edition is being carefully curated to celebrate Margaret River’s natural landscape, our diverse and unique businesses, as well as our outstanding community spirit,” she said.
“The game will encourage residents and visitors to explore what Margaret River has to offer, boosting our local economy.
“We don’t envisage the board attracting visitors to the region, but becoming a souvenir of their visit to the region, which is another reason it is important for the game to reflect our values and local identity.
“It provides a fun and entertaining way for the MRBN to continue to highlight the importance of supporting and promoting local businesses.”
While uptake of the opportunity was lightning fast, Ms McFie said people still had the chance to get involved through the various cards featured in the game.
Community groups had the chance to feature in the game’s Community Chest cards, while advertisers could get their spots on the Chance cards.
The Times understands the playing pieces, once finalised, would also uniquely represent the region.
MRBN president Rob Gough said the board game was a good fit for the region.
“Margaret River is undoubtedly a special place with so many idyllic qualities,” he said.
“And like Margaret River, Monopoly is iconic, appealing to people of all ages and walks of life. It’s good clean fun that doesn’t require a computer or a smart phone, and it’s inherently social.”
