HAZMAT Warning: People warned to stay away from Meelon structure fire producing potentially toxic fumes
Firefighters are trying to put out a blaze in the Shire of Murray, which is producing potentially toxic black fumes.
A structure fire, understood to have engulfed a shed with farm machinery inside, a sea container and a semi-trailer, began on Napier Road near the intersection of Vezey Road in Meelon just before 3pm.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services have issued a HAZMAT warning as the blaze is producing potentially toxic black smoke blowing in a north-easterly direction.
This could affect people to the north and east of Napier Road and the Alcoa Refinery as well as surrounds.
As a precautionary measure, people in the area should remain inside, out of the smoke or fumes, with doors and windows closed.
Air conditioners should also be switched off.
Twelve firefighting crews are at the scene as well as WA Police.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully.
