A desperate rescue operation for two people who fell in crocodile-infested waters in the Kimberley nearly two days ago has become increasingly difficult after a downpour.

Police said that they received reports about two people needing assistance in the Drysdale River — about 150km west of Wyndham — during a water rafting activity about 1pm on Monday.

A police spokesperson said on Wednesday that the rescue had become more complex because of rain.

“Rain fell during the night, causing the river to rise and adding to the complexities of this operations,” they said.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded a staggering 93mm of rain at Drysdale River Station on Sunday alone.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services and Kimberley Police are at the scene assisting with the rescue.

The Drysdale River is infamous for its saltwater crocodile population.
