Lions Outback Vision: Team harnessing AI tools to diagnose health problems from retina scans in Pilbara

Eyes are known as the windows to the soul — but with the help of ground-breaking artificial intelligence tools being pioneered in WA’s Pilbara, they can also provide a window to people’s health. Aiming to save people’s lives as well as their sight, a team from Lions Outback Vision is travelling the outback in a van to provide screening checks using Australia’s first hand-held retinal camera with AI integration. The program’s potential is “astounding”, according to Professor Angus Turner, the Broome-based director of Lions Outback Vision, which launched the project last year. Diabetes is a major cause of blindness for Aboriginal people, but 98 per cent preventable with early treatment. Not only is the AI integrated camera being used to pick up early signs of diabetic retinopathy, the team’s research has found it can also detect other health risks, such as problems with heart, kidneys or brain function. “When you look into the eye, there’s arteries, veins and nerve available for the picture, and they represent a little eye biopsy of the whole body’s health,” Dr Turner said. “And that’s the bit that’s really exciting.” He predicted that GPs in the city would want to install the cameras in their clinics to provide on-the-spot diagnostics. “These cameras are untapped potential,” he said. Dr Turner first partnered with Google five years ago to teach AI tools to detect eye disease using years of anonymised data from 900 Aboriginal patients who attended the Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service. The research showed that AI was actually better at picking up eye problems than trained retina specialists. “The results were stunning,” Dr Turner said. “That was the bit that stirred us into action, because now there’s a way of getting a diagnosis in the back of the eye which anyone can get by just being there with a camera — they don’t have to have eye training.” Taking the technology on the road means that instead of waiting weeks for a diagnosis, patients get an instant result and immediate treatment. “Instead of being left in the dark, they are instantly video-connected to a specialist to chat,” Dr Turner said. “There’s also a cartoon explanation video that describes it in easy terms to understand and has been translated into local language as well.” The project is one of 10 finalists in the Pilbara Challenge — chosen from almost 100 submissions — in a search for world-leading medical research solutions to improve health services in the vast Pilbara region.
