Narrogin Children and Families Inc. purchased the former masonry building to rebuild the town’s school care

A home has been found for Narrogin’s new childcare centre and it could be open in six months. The Narrogin Masonic Lodge will become the town’s new school care centre with a capacity of 30 children per day aged five to 10 years old, easing the pressures on working families. After six months on the lookout for a property, Narrogin Children and Families Incorporated was alerted to the disused Freemasonry building by the Shire of Narrogin on July 26. Narrogin Freemasons vacated the building earlier that month when they merged with Wagin and plan to transfer ownership to the NCFI by December 30. NCFI president Kellie Wilkins said they have raised $15,000 through GoFundMe and event stalls with a $100,000 goal for the building cost and renovations. The centre is scheduled to open in April 2025. Initially, NCFI viewed the property for its childcare hub plans. Ms Wilkins said she cried when the Freemasons accepted their offer on September 7 because the centre is vital for Narrogin’s struggling families. “We’ve had many people reach out to us who’ve lost their jobs or resigned because they couldn’t get care,” she said. “People are child sharing, we’ve got high school students babysitting, parents paying $500 a week for vacation care, which is not suitable in this day and age.” The Fortune Street building is located on the same block as St Matthews Primary School, across the road from Narrogin Primary School and nearby East Narrogin Primary School. Ms Wilkins said the masonry building was the only property that met Australian childcare standards, including the number of toilets and square metres which has been their main issue. “We went through several buildings and found the same issues, they needed too many repairs or weren’t suitable by Australian standards,” she said. “The masonry is essentially a big hall, it’s very easy to tick the boxes. “The building has essential things, like a kitchen, so we don’t need to renovate entire sections. “We also have the ability for an outdoor area and ample parking.” Property trustee and Freemason Darryl Gaull said it was a great result for the building. “You don’t want to see it become empty,” he said. “It’s been there for 117 years and the Freemasons couldn’t continue so I think it’s great Narrogin Children and Families Incorporated can use it. “It’s been a bit neglected as a small organisation like the Freemasons couldn’t spend the money required — I wish them all the best.” Ms Wilkins said they must rewire and replace the building flooring, repair white ant damage, install a hot water system, add fencing, and repaint before opening.
