South Hedland’s skatepark open to skaters after shade structure works completed

Hedland skaters are finally able to enjoy the world’s largest shaded skatepark, featuring LED lights and an art installation, after the $7.2 million project was completed.

The skatepark in South Hedland was initially opened in 2015, without shade, through a $4 million investment and in 2019 the Town of Port Hedland endorsed a concept design for shading.

Works began in April that year before a national steel shortage forced construction to stop last September for six months, with the project resuming this March.

The latest improvement to the facility features a state-of-the-art shade structure which includes audio-visual technology, an expansion of the rideable space, and refurbishment of the existing skatepark.

The Town of Port Hedland announced on October 19 that construction fences would be moved back and the main parts of the skatepark opened for the public to use.

However, some parts would remain closed while further landscaping work continues.

Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter said it was an exciting moment to have the construction fences moved and members of the community once again enjoying the park.

“The skatepark is a prized possession for the Hedland community and was always impressive. With this latest $7.2 million investment in the shade structure, it elevates the facility to among the best skateparks in the world,” he said.

“We’ve done our research and can confirm that the South Hedland skatepark is the largest shaded skatepark in the world.

“I’m expecting people from all over Australia, and even the globe, will want to come and experience the facility for themselves.”

Mr Carter said the Town appreciated the community’s patience while the redevelopment and construction took place.

“Over the last year and a half we have completely transformed the facility,” he said.

Mr Carter said council was committed to investing in Hedland to ensure the community was provided with amenities that made living and working in the district attractive.

“The Town has recently confirmed its plans to construct projects that amount to $817 million of investment over the next 15 years,” he said.

“The shaded skatepark is a prime example of how this sort of investment can completely change the look and feel of a town, while providing opportunities for activity and exercise.”

An official opening is planned for late November which will feature renowned skaters and riders for an exhibition-style event and workshops.
