70-year-old man dies in hospital after falling eight metres at Karijini National Park’s Handrail Pool

An elderly man from the State’s South West region has died after falling eight metres in Karijini National Park on Saturday. The 70-year-old man was at the park for the Karijini Experience with his son and grandson when he fell at Handrail Pool in Weano Gorge at about 2.50pm and suffered a serious head injury. He died from his injuries on Tuesday night at Royal Perth Hospital with his family by his side. Tom Price Police officer-in-charge Sergeant Nicole Mizen said the last time someone died in the park was in January 2019, and reminded visitors about the dangers of the park. “This has been the first fall in a number of years that has resulted in a death,” she said. “It’s a really, really dangerous place. You can take all the precautions and still slip. “I don’t think people, and not this person, but I don’t think in general society takes the danger serious enough of our natural beauties.” The man’s fall prompted a large scale gorge rescue on Saturday, with St John Ambulance, SES, police and rangers involved. “We closed all the gorges immediately. The rangers did a great job in getting everyone else out of all the gorges which took about an hour and a half,” Sgt Mizen said. “They had rangers that came in off duty to get people out safely. They closed the roads. “That’s just to ensure no one else can have an incident while the rescue is going on. “We were out at the scene within the hour. SES from Newman also came and assisted. It was a tricky lift. You need those extra people. “One of the rangers was actually on scene when it happened. And there was a paramedic on scene.” Sgt Mizen said a number of gorges in the park were currently closed due to rain, as the potential for injury remains high. “They will remain closed until the Department of Parks (and Wildlife) deems them safe enough to open, so probably a few days,” she said.
