Beach concert begins Youth Week in Karratha

A beachside concert, held on April 13, for young locals aged 11-25 kicked off a week of celebrations for youth in Karratha, Dampier, Roebourne and Wickham.

WA Youth Week. which ran from April 13 to 20, is an annual Statewide celebration of the positive contributions made by young people to their communities.

The Covechella Youth Festival opening night was held at Shark Cage Beach in Dampier and featured Brisbane-based DJ Noiz, live performances from young local musicians, and stalls including a henna hut and glitter gazebo.

In the week afterwards, the City hosted various events including movie nights, basketball competitions, dodge-ball tournaments and a Birds of Prey interactive display.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the local program coincided with more than 100 events held across WA under the theme “Nurture the Now”.

“This year’s theme encourages young people to affirm their potential for positive impact during their development and to validate their achievements,” he said.

“By actively engaging the views of our young people, the City continues to increase our level of service for our future leaders and explore opportunities to do more in this space.”

Activities for youth will continue to run throughout the school holidays until Sunday, April 28.

“I encourage young people to get along to one of the many events on offer throughout April,” CR Long said.
