Boys score scholarships
Two outstanding young students have secured their chance to attend the Pilbara’s only private school after being awarded a scholarship from one of the region’s biggest accommodation providers.
The Luke’s College Year 7 students William Lukas and Brian Nguyen received the scholarships from Cherratta Lodge, totalling about $50,000 each over their six years at the high school.
The young achievers were the first students to be chosen for the funding after Cherratta Lodge announced last year the endowment would go towards books, fees, and uniforms.
The scholarships are open to students from Years 7-12 and will be provided every year until the students leave the school. Cherratta Lodge chief executive Malcolm Wylie said the students were chosen because of their diverse backgrounds.
“William discovered 12 months ago that there was Aboriginal heritage in their family ... he wants to be a lawyer and to right people’s wrongs and make sure things don’t happen the way they did in the past,” he said.
“One of the things I liked about Bryan’s submission was he had been through adversity when he came to a new country — he didn’t speak the country’s language.
“He’s taught himself to speak it and is doing an excellent job to the point he is winning awards for English.”
Both boys said they were thankful to receive the scholarships.
