Crabs still top despite washout

Pegs Creek Cricket Club had victory slip through their fingers when heavy rain caused the second last round of the women’s 20-over competition to be abandoned last week.

Pegs Creek Crabs got off to a flying start at Baynton West Oval, with Emily Caputo and Jessica Creighton putting Rec Club to the sword with frequent boundaries.

Star batter Creighton demolished Rec Club’s attack, smashing 10 fours on her way to a career-high score of 64 before retiring not out.

Caputo was then joined at the crease by Jessica Pitchers as they continued to pile on the runs, taking the Crabs to an imposing 0-150 from 20 overs.

Caputo carried her bat on 39 runs from 58 deliveries while Pitchers made 15 from 10.

April Armstrong had the best bowling figures for Rec Club, with 0-21 from her four overs.

With a required run rate of 7.5, Rec’s run chase got off to a bad start when a sharp piece of fielding by Makinley Minchin sent Christy Reed’s stumps cartwheeling in the first over.

Regular wickets followed as Rec Club limped to 6-61 in the 19th over before rain drenched the field, causing the game to be abandoned.

Ashleigh Homes was the stand-out bowler taking 2-4 from her four overs, while Minchin, Creighton and Leanne Minchin all finished with a wicket each.

The washout meant Rec Club were awarded their first points of the season, while Crabs remain well clear in first place.
