Dampier Sharks back-to-back premiers in North Pilbara Football League reserves

The Dampier Sharks became the first team in 12 years to win back-to-back premierships in the North Pilbara Football League reserves competition after they defeated South Hedland Swans 13.13 (91) to 5.5 (35).

The grand final at Windy Ridge Oval on September 11 saw the Swans get off to a flyer, booting 4.2 to the Sharks’ 2.2 and looked ready to upset the reigning premiers.

However, the Sharks rallied in the second quarter, kicking with the wind, the home side booted 2.5 to reclaim the lead at half-time.

A rampant third quarter saw Dampier seize complete control of the game.

Despite kicking into the strong wind, the home side booted six goals to one to hold a game-high 33 point lead at the final change.

A flawless final term saw Dampier boot another three goals while restricting the visitors to just one behind to run home with the victory.

The victory meant Dampier became the first side since the Karratha Falcons in 2010 to win back-to-back flags in the reserves competition.

Dampier Sharks coach Gavin O’Brien said the club had to fight hard for the victory.

“(To) All the south Hedland boys we knew you were coming hard and had a great second half of the year so really appreciate the game today and have a safe trip back home,” he said.

“To our boys and all out our trainers our staff fantastic job all year.

“Really good team effort from everyone involved wasn’t just the the players it goes far beyond that.”

O’Brien said he could not be be happier about the result.

“We were worked hard for it, but we really pulled it out in that second half, boys,” he said.
