Dampier Sharks secure first win in NPFL premiership defence after downing South Hedland Swans
The Dampier Sharks secured their first win in the premiership defence after downing the South Hedland Swans by 32 points in round two of the North Pilbara Football League.
The Sharks travelled to South Hedland’s Kevin Scott Oval for the game on April 30 determined to secure the win after their loss to the Wickham Wolves in round one.
It was a close opening quarter with both sides scoring two goals and the Sharks holding a slim two-point lead at quarter time.
The second term was when Dampier seized control of the momentum and the game, kicking 6.6 to the Swans 2.2 to lead by 28 points at the main break.
Both teams had their moments in the third quarter but the Sharks maintained their composure and were able to extend their lead to 33 points.
The Sharks were wasteful in the final term, controlling the football for the majority of the quarter but only scoring 1.8.
In the end the inaccuracy did not matter with the Dampier Sharks coming away on top and downing the South Hedland Swans 12.17 (89) to 8.9 (57).
Ricky Cary was the top scorer for Dampier with four goals while Warwick Wilson booted three for the Swans.
In the reserves, the Dampier Sharks secured the victory by 15 points over the South Hedland Swans 9.10 (64) to 7.7 (49).
