‘Disgusting’ thieves target Karratha RSL hours after ANZAC Day commemorations

Karratha RSL President Darren Dymocks has slammed the “disgusting” thieves who broke into the organisation’s headquarters just hours after ANZAC Day commemorations ended.

CCTV captured a group of unknown assailants entering the Karratha and Districts RSL headquarters in Millars Well at around 1.15am on April 26, after they allegedly smashed a lock on the main entrance.

Luckily, the thieves were unable to gain access to areas with any valuables, and left empty handed.

Karratha and Districts RSL President Darren Dymock said despite nothing being stolen, the damage to the club had left himself and many supporters “disgusted”.

“The last place you want to break into is a RSL —or anywhere really— but particularly an RSL the day after Anzac day,” he said.

“They got in to the club but got away with nothing, everything was locked away.

“We’ve got really good supporters and really good committee members that rallied around us on the Tuesday and Wednesday and helped secure the club and got an extra screen put up where they broke into.”

Mr Dymock said the community support was welcomed.

“The community always gets around the RSL or any any club or person,” he said.

“This being a small community we all support each other and help each other when anyone gets broken into. We look after our Neighbors on our own streets, keep an eye on each other when we go on holidays or weekends.”

Karratha resident and RSL supporter Shirley Macneil posted on Facebook saying she was appalled that someone broke into the RSL just hours after ANZAC Day.

“It is especially abhorrent that it was done when everyone was paying homage to our servicemen/Women this Anzac weekend,” she said.

“Shame on you.”

Karratha Police confirmed they were investigating the burglary.

“We’ve got CCTV we are waiting to be uploaded to our system and we will look at that and see if we can identify who they are.”

Sen. Sergeant Matthews said investigations were ongoing.
