It’s a treasured part of the Exmouth sporting community, and this year the Golf Club is celebrating 50 years of hole-in-ones with an official ceremony last Wednesday kicking off a year of commemoration.

It was on June 26 half a century ago that a public meeting was held to elect the first committee of the Exmouth Golf Club. To celebrate, nine holes of golf was played with hidden secret partners to determine the result.

Dale Russell and Suzie Lorraway won the event with a combined score of 39 Stableford points and all 62 players who participated were presented with a 50th anniversary key ring.

The day included an official ceremony after the golf with speeches by the Shire president Matt Niikkula and the club’s president Bron Giles.

Anniversary working group member Neil Haywood said Mr Niikkula and Ms Giles unveiled a timeline sign that tells the golf club's story over the last 50 years.

“The sign is in a really great location and is displayed in the carpark at the golf club where it can be viewed by the general public and visiting golfers,” he said.

The event concluded with foundation members Jeni King, Kaye Cooper and John Cooper enjoying a cake-cutting ceremony.

Mr Haywood said the club offered a lot to the people of Exmouth. “It’s an avenue for residents and visitors in the community to participate in a game they love,” he said.

“Plus it’s a great outlet for those involved to mix with a different group of people after the working week.”

A cocktail party will be held on Friday night, the Harold Trophy on Saturday, the Exmouth Open on July 13 and 14, the Ladies Pilbara Open on July 27 and 28 and a wind-up in November with a Swinging Sixties theme to recognise the year the club began.
