People near the Western Turner Minesite and drivers travelling along Nanutarra-Munjina Road have been advised to leave or get ready to defend their property as a bushfire watch and act alert has been issued this afternoon.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services warns there is a possible threat to lives and homes in these areas as the bushfire that has been burning near Tom Price for more than a week is approaching and conditions are changing.

They have advised people to leave now if the way is clear or they are not well-prepared, or if they are prepared to get ready to actively defend their property.

The alert comes as the fire, currently located to the west of the Tom Price townsite and travelling towards the Western Turner Minesite, has broken through containment lines.

Tom Price and nearby communities and minesites have been affected by the blaze for more than a week now as it has burnt through 1600 hectares of land.

The Nanutarra-Munjina Road between the Paraburdoo townsite and Nameless Valley Road has also been closed.
