Fourteen-year-old Pilbara karting prodigy is taking on adults in the Darwin Karting Association Championship

A Pilbara go-karting prodigy has taken on adults at the Darwin Karting Association Championship and has held his own against some of Australia’s best. Riley Grey came fourth at the championship event on Sunday, July 2 as he prepares for the State title. Representing the Karratha Kart Club, Riley’s mum Lyn explained how her son has become known as a natural talent within the sport. “He started karting from the day he could get behind the wheel,” Ms Grey said. “He started at six years of age and has been driving really well ever since, so we’ve put him in the senior classes a lot faster than probably other children his age because he’s a very competent little driver.” Riley competed in four races in the lead-up to the championship event on the weekend. He placed second in one of the events and third in two others as he competed against drivers far older than himself. Whilst he didn’t take out the main prize, Ms Grey said her son was well-placed to go into the State championship over the weekend. “The race has given him the opportunity to work out what’s not working with the kart and where he needs to sit speed-wise,” she said. “It’s not his driving skills it’s just about tweaking the kart to perform with him.” Riley will now take part in the 2023 Northern Territory Kart Association Championship from July 6 to 9.
