Karratha golfers vie for Sandover Cup

Following on from some great successes at the Port Hedland Open the previous weekend, Karratha Golf Club members turned out in force on Saturday to compete for the esteemed Sandover Cup.

Saturday marked the 51st year of one of the club’s longest-running annual events, and players were treated to perfect golfing conditions as they vied for the trophy.

The clear winner, who came home with a fantastic score of 42 Stableford points, was David Thoms.

Happy to be back with his own set of golf clubs after three weeks away, Thoms settled in quickly and enjoyed a great round of golf on the day.

His name will join the other 50 winners engraved on the cup for posterity. Coming in second with an excellent score of 40 was Andy Clifton, winning on a countback over Nina Kovac, who finished in third place, also on 40 points.

The gross winner with 77 points was Chris Stewart who also took nearest the pin on the 16th.

Other novelty prizes went to Lorrie Bertrend and Digger Holmes for longest drives, and Monica Plane and Dave Innes, who took out the longest putt.

Innes also took out best second shot on the 4th, with Martin Smith best second shot on the 13th and Brett Manners nailing best third shot on the 12th.Nearest the pin on the 5th was Michael Heap, and Scott Pitchers on the 8th.

Thoms was also nearest the pin on the 11th and best third shot on the 7th.
