Overnight efforts from local firefighters has seen a blaze burning near the Karratha Light Industrial Area extinguished this morning.

The bushfire started in an isolated area 50m west of Maitland Road yesterday afternoon and burnt through 580ha of land, with flames reaching about three metres high at its peak.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services regional district officer Luke Mitchinson said the fire had not been difficult to extinguish but had “taken time” due to the hilly terrain in the area.

He said crews were happy the fire had been “contained, controlled and extinguished”.

The cause of the fire is unknown but Mr Mitchinson said there was a possibility it could be suspicious and DFES would be investigating in coming days.

The fire never posed a risk to people or properties, but several roads were closed as firefighters battled the blaze yesterday afternoon.
