The Pilbara’s best golfers packed the greens of Karratha Golf Club over the weekend to take their shot at winning the club’s annual open event.

There were 115 players gathered for the Karratha Open at the weekend, including those from Karratha, Tom Price, Fortescue, Hedland, Newman, Exmouth and even Bunbury.

Conditions were perfect across the two-day event, but a little bit of wind picked up on Sunday.

In A-grade, the male and female champions were Nathan Woods with a gross score of 142 and five-time champion Sunan Ong-Arch on 171 gross. The grade’s net score winners were Amish Dykes (143) and Beryl Lynn (146).

The men’s B-grade was won by Martin Smith (73), while Aaron Durkin took out men’s C (79).

Tania Willcocks was ladies B winner on 71 points.

Event organiser Darren Beier said the conditions were perfect.

“You couldn’t have asked for a better weekend,” he said.

“After all the coronavirus and how it has changed the sporting industry in the Pilbara it is good to see that we can still play sport with a few restrictions.

“We are lucky and we hope we can get through the next two months and try to get all the clubs to have their opens before it gets too hot.”
