North West Shelf Project reaches milestone loading of 6000th cargo of LNG at Karratha Gas Plant

The North West Shelf Project has reached a major milestone, after loading its 6000th cargo of Liquefied Natural Gas from the Karratha Gas Plant. The North West Shelf Project, located on the Burrup, has been operating since 1984 with the first cargo of LNG arriving in Tokyo Bay in 1989. On September 10, Captain Yoshimoto of the Energy Frontier accepted the 6000th LNG cargo, bound for Japan, and was presented with a commemorative photo. LNG exported from Karratha is predominantly used in power and electricity generation throughout the Asia-Pacific region. NWS Project vice president Breyden Lonnie said he was proud to be commemorating 6000 cargoes of LNG from Karratha Gas Plant and supporting the world’s energy needs through safe, reliable and efficient operations. “The North West Shelf Project has delivered reliable energy to local and global customers and contributed to the vibrancy of the Pilbara community for almost 40 years,” he said. “We are working to ensure the North West Shelf Project continues to deliver employment and value for decades to come.” Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Authority recommended ministerial approval for Woodside and its joint venture partners to extend the life of the gas project to 2070 subject to strict conditions
