Past and present students and teachers celebrate golden jubilee with community event
Karratha Senior High School turned golden when it celebrated its 50-year anniversary with a community event that drew students and teachers past and present.
The Karratha Senior High School 50th anniversary celebrations took place on September 15 and featured a showcase of memorabilia and old photos as students and teachers reminisced about the past.
Established in 1972, the school became a senior high school two years later.
In 2011, works to transform the facility were completed with new administration and student blocks, a library, cafeteria and five teaching blocks.
The teaching blocks comprised English, Humanities and Social Sciences; Mathematics and Science; Materials Technology; Food and Textiles; and the Arts.
Speaking at the 50th anniversary, former student Sheree Scantlebury said the atmosphere in the 1980s was friendly due to the small number of students at the school.
“I know for myself, a lot of us did primary school together and then into high school, I’m still in contact today with some of my school friends,” she said.
Meanwhile Naomi Sambell said when she was at the school in the 1980s it had a good scholastic program.
“It was a good and positive place,” she said.
“It has changed, it’s probably good the old building went and the new building is beautiful . . . it’s really big now.”
Merve Edwards had his child go to the high school while he lived in town from 1972-2000.
“It was good for our family with the high school here, and we can look back with fond memories of the place,” he said.
