Pilbara to host workshops and activities for 16 days in WA campaign against family and domestic violence.

Pilbara groups and WA organisations are gearing up to host a series of events, workshops, and activities for the 16 Days in WA campaign in an effort to tackle family and domestic violence across the State. The activations will be held between November 25 to December 10 in Newman, South Hedland, Nickol and Tom Price, offering opportunities for education, connection and empowerment. In Newman, the events kick off with a Book Club High Tea on November 30 at the Newman Library. Hosted by the Newman Women’s Shelter, the event will feature author Melissa Lucashenko speaking via Zoom about her award-winning book Too Much Lip. Guests can enjoy finger foods and refreshments while engaging in discussions about the book’s themes of family and redemption. On December 3, the Clothesline Project Workshop at the Newman Neighbourhood Centre invites participants to design T-shirts with messages of healing and hope for those impacted by family and domestic violence. In South Hedland, Lifeline WA and Relationships WA will host a DV-Alert First Nations Foundations Training workshop on December 5 and 6. This two-day workshop, held at Lotteries House, aims to equip frontline workers with the skills to recognise, respond to, and refer cases of family and domestic violence, with a focus on supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Participants who successfully complete the free workshop will receive a nationally recognised unit of competency. In Nickol, a Women’s Wellness and Safety Event will take place on December 6 at the Tambrey Pavilion on Tambrey Oval. This family-friendly event will feature workshops led by local women, market stalls, and activities that promote health and wellbeing. On December 8, families can gather at Newman’s Town Square for the free Twilight Movie Night to watch Sweet As, an uplifting film about friendships and self-discovery. The Pilbara-based events conclude in Tom Price on December 9 with a Play Your Part Information Stall at the town mall precinct, with the Nintirri Centre providing resources and information to help the community support the fight against family and domestic violence.
