Residents unite to remember sacrifices
Hundreds of Karratha residents lined their driveways to pay their respects for an Anzac Day unlike any other on Saturday.
With all formal dawn services cancelled because of social-distancing regulations, locals took to their driveway with candles to listen to the Last Post and commemorate the sacrifice of service personnel past and present.
Handmade wreaths were placed along the fence of the Karratha Returned and Services League, while the Karratha Volunteer and Fire Rescue Service laid a wreath at the memorial.
City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said he was impressed with the number of residents coming out to their driveways and that it was a way for the community to remain united.
“It’s very important for the community to come together; people are isolated in their houses and there’s a lot of stress because people don’t have jobs right now,” he said.
“Having comradeship and fellowship with each other is very important.”
Member for the Pilbara Kevin Michel said it was important for the community to continue to pay their respects. “You can see my street, everyone is coming out to pay their respects to the fallen, and it’s very important that we never forget this tradition,” he said.
