Roebourne artist’s work features in national mag
One of Roebourne’s most respected elders has had her talent as an artist recognised at a national level after one of her artworks was featured in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine.
Ngarluma elder and Roebourne Art Group senior artist Nana Violet Samson’s art ended up in the magazine after someone purchased her work and then had their home, with Violet’s art on the wall, showcased.
Nana Violet said she did not know the person who had bought the piece, but it was very special to see her art in a national magazine.
“It shows you that people here can create really amazing art,” she said.
“Art tells stories, this one was about bush tucker and medicine and tells that many years ago, before shops came around, people used bush tucker to eat and survive.”
The Roebourne Art Group gives artists the opportunity to paint and show their craft at exhibitions.
“The group is doing a great job, a lot of us enter the Cossack Art Awards and we usually do pretty well,” Nana Violet said.
“Art works tells our story and our history, about our land and our heritage and helps people to respect Aboriginal culture.”
The public will be able to view more of Violet’s artwork later this year during NAIDOC Week and at the Cossack Art Awards.
