A community centre providing vital education, employment, training and business support has officially opened in Roebourne.

The Roebourne Community Resource Centre, run by Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation Ltd, at the Ganalili Centre held its official opening on August 12 with community members, industry partners and government members attending the ceremony.

The State Government announced in March that NYFl had been selected to run the CRC, with the facility to provide access to a range of government and community services, and information including education, employment, training and business support.

It will also have the opportunity to promote local events, community groups and tourism opportunities.

Chief executive Graeme Sheard said the centre was about giving locals access to technology and training.

“Now people in Roebourne have access to modern computers, printers, video conferencing, they can even do telehealth here,” he said.

“So instead of having to travel to Perth, they can come in here and do a video conference with their doctor in Perth without the need to travel.

“For a town like this, this sort of access is really important. there’s very limited resources available and something like this means that 1000 people have access now,” he said.

Mr Sheard said the focus was now about raising awareness of the CRC within the community.

“One of the difficulties is how do we get the message out there that we can actually offer and support the community,” he said.

“Through things like social media campaigns, just simply text messages, billboards, we’re going to have a whole sort of program trying to tell the community we exist and then encouraging them to come in and use the facilities.”
