With a once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse just months away, the Shire of Exmouth has opened more overflow camp sites to accommodate an influx of tourists wanting to be at the heart of the action.

The hybrid solar eclipse will be visible from select WA locations on April 20 including Exmouth and Onslow — the first time in more than 1000 years a hybrid eclipse will be visible from Australia.

A hybrid solar eclipse is a relatively rare astronomical event and occurs when the Moon’s shadow only falls on some sections of the planet due to the curvature of the Earth.

Exmouth will get a front row seat as the only location to experience a total solar eclipse when 100 per cent of the sun is covered by the Moon.

Up to 10,000 visitors are expected to flock to Exmouth to see the spectacle.

The Shire of Exmouth last week opened bookings for serviced sites at the council’s overflow camping ground on Welch Street.

It comes after the Shire released 500 sites for self-contained travellers at the overflow grounds in October.

Self-serviced and serviced sites are available to book for a minimum of four nights from April 7-29.

The 8x8m serviced sites include access to basic showers, portable toilets, a camp kitchen, food trucks and coffee vans.

Shire of Exmouth president Darlene Allston said the shire was excited to be able to release the additional sites after working on the final approvals with the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation.

“We are pleased with the progress to date and are looking forward to welcoming our visitors to Exmouth for this once-in-a-lifetime event,” she said.
