Short Back & Sidewalks receives regional expansion funding to deliver free haircuts to marginalised people

The power of a fresh haircut should not be underestimated, something Short Back & Sidewalks knows all too well through its work providing free haircuts to vulnerable and marginalised community members. Recognising the importance of offering free haircuts, free of judgment, Horizon Power has donated $10,000 to contribute to Short Back & Sidewalks’ regional expansion project. The project will allow the not-for-profit organisation to reach areas in the Pilbara such as Karratha, Roebourne and Hedland. “The phase we’re in now is the start of establishing these services, and the next 12 months will be about really bedding them in so they’re ongoing in the community,” Short Back & Sidewalks CEO Natalie Jenkins said. “When you get a fresh haircut, you feel more self-confident, you feel that other people aren’t judging you for the way that you look. “For the people that we provide our services for, people that are experiencing homelessness, poverty and disadvantage, they are often not feeling that way, they feel marginalised from the community. “If you feel that way internally, it’s very hard to go out and connect with other people, connect with other services, going for housing appointments or going for that job interview.” Recently spending a week in the Pilbara, Short Back & Sidewalks took part in the Swans Be You All Abilities Sport and Wellbeing Day at Bulgarra Oval, launched services in Roebourne at Yaandina Community Services, and met volunteers and service providers in Port and South Hedland. “We have had so many great conversations across the 11 towns that we’ve been to over the course of the year, and we’ve had a resounding positive response from the community and volunteer hairdressers who want to give their time to give back locally,” Ms Jenkins said. “We’re really thrilled to have the support of organisations like Horizon Power that are coming to the table and helping to make it happen.” The regional expansion funding is part of Horizon Power’s Community Partnership Program, which awarded $494,788 to 52 community organisations throughout regional WA. Horizon Power CEO Stephanie Unwin said the organisation was proud to support a range of initiatives which enhanced and empowered regional communities. “From sporting events to cultural festivals, these unique grassroot initiatives are embraced by the communities across our entire service area, which covers the largest geographical catchment of any Australian energy provider,” she said. “Our partnerships are focused on ensuring not-for-profits and other organisations can continue to deliver meaningful initiatives and events which are strengthening the fabric of their communities.”
