Bay Village camp in Karratha set to get go-ahead

The State Government is entering lease negotiations to allow construction of Woodside’s Bay Village workers camp in Karratha.

Making the announcement at the North West Shelf visitor centre Friday morning, WA Premier Mark McGowan said the camp was required to ensure the workforce for Woodside’s future projects could operate out of Karratha.

“We are entering negotiations now with Woodside to allow for construction of the Bay Village Accommodation facility,” he said.

“It is required to bring Browse and Scarborough gas onshore.

“If we don’t do that the construction workforce wont be able to operate here in Karratha.”

Mr McGowan said local jobs would be prioritised to run the facility.

Planning Minister Rita Saffioti said the agreement to create a local jobs portal had been crucial to entering lease negotiations.

“Now we have these participation plans in place for local jobs in Karratha, as well as the local jobs portal, the State will enter into negotiations for a land lease at Bay Village,” she said.

“Any subsequent development will be subject to normal planning approval processes with maximising local jobs our key consideration.”

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said he was disappointed with the decision, but the City would make the best of the situation.
