Tourism onthe agenda

With Paraburdoo and Pannawonica representatives elected unopposed to the council, Tom Price is the only Shire of Ashburton ward where the local government contest is yet to be decided.

This week, we asked Tom Price ward candidates which industry sectors they think present the most opportunity for economic diversification in Ashburton, and what they would do to promote that if elected.

Tourism is a booming industry in the North West.

I would like to see more businesses that support tourists like budget accommodation, mechanical services, auto-electrical, and custom tours for individual needs. We need to improve our roads for new business opportunities that might be able to complement the tourist industry.

Businesses need to see what they can offer for the average traveller.

Roads and tourism are big items on my agenda.

The obvious answer for economic diversity and stability in the Pilbara region is tourism.

Tourists flock to the Pilbara region each year, many to see the wonders of Karijini National Park. An improved tourism sector, particularly in Tom Price, would create much-needed diversification and most importantly local jobs.

If elected, to council I would work to promote the town of Tom Price as somewhere to spend time and importantly money at local business rather than a place to refuel and head off again. Locals know how great the town and its businesses are, it’s time the tourists did too!
