Young talent shines at show

A rich array of artistic talent from young Karratha residents was on display at the Karratha Senior High School Arts Showcase late last month.

Hundreds of people turned out for the annual school event, which brings together students’ works in visual art, music, drama and dance to showcase to their families, friends and teachers.

Visual artworks including painting, drawing, sculpture and photography were the focus for the first hour, before a variety of music, drama and dance performers had their time to shine on the main stage.

KSHS art teacher Tilly Gregson said the showcase was a way for the wider school community to show their appreciation of the creative talent and hard work of students.

“It helps the kids to see an end product and it also helps them to see what other people are doing — it gives them a sense of pride,” she said.

“If it’s up, the teachers have recognised that it’s good, and we’ve put it out on display for everybody to see and they can bring their family down — it gives them a sense of ownership.”

Among the performance work highlights were a Year 9 tribute to Commedia dell’arte theatre, a rousing concert band performance and three Year 10 music students performing their own original music compositions.

KSHS arts head Leanne Hunt said it had been another successful Arts Showcase and she was proud of the students’ works.
