The Ladies Day fishing tournament on Saturday was fabulous.

Anglers Leah Burkala and Lexi Taylor had never seen a marlin before, and managed to see one caught and learn about how to target them.

Taylor also caught a yellowfin tuna and Burkala caught a striped tuna.

Angler Nikki Sutton caught her first marlin and helped her team take out the Champion Team tag and release billfish section title on the boat Azura. Team In Deep won Champion Boat overall and the prizes from the Exmouth Newsagency and Pulsator Lures were well received.

Yellowfin tuna have been caught by anglers trolling lures at the back of the reef between Tantabiddi north and south passages.

The water has been clear right into the back of the reef at times, with sailfish also encountered in the area.

Not many mackerel have been seen in this stretch, but there’s alsways something to grab your eye.

Anglers fishing the area caught plenty of fish and also saw whale sharks, turtles, dolphins, whales and a rather large hammerhead shark.

In the deeper waters of 60m-100m there have been schools of striped tuna on the surface and the odd wahoo.

Tackleworld staffers Azza Fitzgerald, James Abberley and friends had a hectic session on shark mackerel and Spanish mackerel north of the tip of the cape.

They released plenty of both species, catching them on Maria Loaded stickbaits and casting medium-sized shallow-running minnows at them.

They found the hook-up rate better without wire but did lose a few lures as a result. The sharks were also a bit of a problem at times.

The Saltwater Fly Fishing Festival was a huge success, despite some windy periods through the week. Alan Donald put together a great event and has made a Ytube clip that has had many views.

The guys and girls all had a fabulous time and will be back again for the next one in 2017.

There were some interesting captures and many releases of fish from permit to trevally, snapper, marlin and sailfish to name a few.

The next major event is the Australian Junior Billfish Tournament.

This event is designed to teach young kids how to work as a team aboard a boat and learn all that is required to be on the water and chasing billfish.
