A scrub fire which burnt approximately 900ha of land near Wickham has been contained and controlled by emergency services.

The fire was sparked by a power pole near the Roebourne Prison on the Point Samson-Roebourne road before 4pm yesterday afternoon.

Volunteer firefighting crews from Roebourne and Wickham, as well as personnel from Rio Tinto and DFES, worked overnight to control the blaze as it burnt out land between the Roebourne prison and Wickham town site.

DFES Pilbara regional director John Winton said favourable terrain enabled firefighters to contain the blaze quickly.

Mr Winton said there was never any threat to homes due to the effective response of emergency services.

Three crews are still at the scene patrolling the area and doing a final mop up.

No warnings are in place.
