There was excitement galore at the hockey carnival in Port Hedland on Saturday for the North West Hockey Championship.

Teams from Karratha, Port Hedland and Newman converged on the Port Hedland Racecourse for the annual competition.

Games were shortened for the day.

Twenty minutes were played in the round robin competition, followed by a 40-minute grand final between the two best sides on the day.

In the first game of the day Hedland took on Newman, with the home team coming away with a tight 1-0 win.

Both teams from Karratha played in the second game and played out a nil-all draw.

Hedland proved their quality on the field with a 2-0 win over Karratha (blue) in the third game.

Newman lost to Karratha (green) in a close 1-0 game, but Karratha (green) followed their win with a 1-0 loss to Hedland.

In the final round robin game Karratha (blue) played Newman, with the former needing a win to get through to the final.

The blue team took the honours following a late goal from Chris Lees, putting them through to the final on goal difference.

The grand final was a close affair, with extra players needed from the knocked-out teams to help make up the 11-a-side game.

However, Karratha proved too good for the opposition. The standout player was Steve Cook who scored the only goal in Karratha’s 1-nil win.
