The Port Walcott Surf Lifesaving Club’s awards night last Friday was more than a big night for just the club, with several high school students getting to test their catering skills at an event for the first time.

Eight of Karratha Senior High School’s 80-strong Certificate II Hospitality course students catered to a crowd of 123 children, parents and VIP guests such as City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long and Surf Life Saving WA board member Chris Brien.

KSHS chef lecturer Nickie Ralph said it was an opportunity some students may never have got to be a part of.

“Having managed and catered many events both here and in Europe over the years, when Port Walcott were planning their gala awards night I proposed a menu for Karratha Senior High to provide the catering,” she said.

“Being involved in a community event is very important, I believe, and with me being active member of Port Walcott, it is great for both the school and club.

“So during this past week, we have been preparing the dishes and those who were able will be joining this evening to help set up and serve the meals.”
