Cement truck rollover causes sticky situation

Peter de KruijffPilbara News

A batch of cement got a little over-mixed last Friday morning after a cement truck rolled over the barrier of a roundabout joining Balmoral Road and Dampier Highway.

The driver didn't suffer any major injuries, but was taken to Nickol Bay Hospital.

Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service captain Mark Ellison said it had been one of their more unusual callouts, dealing not only with the rollover, but a resulting fuel spill too.

"We got up there and it was mainly just oil and hydraulics … we mopped that up and we hung around to protect the hill because it was in a grassed area," he said.

"When they were trying to flip it back up to its feet, (because) if it caused a spark it could have run up the hill which was my main concern."

VFRS volunteers also helped out by trying to shovel setting cement off of the road.

The truck was eventually brought back to an upright position by a crane.
