An overcast afternoon and a mild westerly breeze created perfect cool conditions last Sunday for round 2 of the Burrup Mountain Bike Summer Social Series.

Competitors had one hour to complete as many laps as possible over the 4.7km set course.

The course incorporated a range of interesting mountain bike trails including Dogs Hollow, which was a steep uphill followed by a long fast-flowing roller-coaster downhill section.

The Dogs Breakfast section was a chaotic short new section of single track which ran along a rocky ridge ending with a steep downhill section into a berm.

Riders also had to complete the classic, tight, technical dirtmasters loop.

Race director Richie Chipman said many people turned up for the event, including 36 riders and a number of enthusiastic supporters.

"Whoever completes the most laps and gets over the line first in each category wins the bragging rights until the next event," he said. "The main purpose is to have a bit of fun.

"A fantastic effort was made by all riders, with special mentions to Mark Smith, Nick Muller and Toby Muller who all managed to complete an incredible five laps in the hour, and finished in that respective order."

Mr Chipman also said it was particularly encouraging to see a wide spectrum of new and familiar riders in all categories including elite, expert, sport, ladies, juniors (from 13 years) and even a number of youngsters (eight to 12 years) in the dirtmasters category.

The next summer social series will be held on January 5 at 6.30am.
