Fast and furious racing at BMX championships

Fast and furious racing closed the North West Championships at Karratha BMX Club last Saturday night.

The third and final round of racing was a hugely successful event, with participants competing from Tom Price, Hedland, Karratha and Perth.

The evening had great weather conditions for racing, with 140 riders making up the field.

Many of the final placings of the series came down to the final race of the evening, making for a tense and exciting atmosphere.

The series finished with trophy presentation and breakfast at the Dampier Palms.

Ty Kilmartin placed first for the series in the eight-year-old boys division, with Jordan Callum first for nines, Joseph Gemmola for tens, Jackson Tatham for 11s, Dylan Bennetts for 12s and Bailey King first for 13 to 14.

Isaac Lyon placed first for the 15 to 17-year-old boys, with Rodney Gethin taking out the over-18s title.

For the girls, Grace Eaton placed first for the series in eight to nine division, with Jasmin Killmartin coming in first for 10 to 11-year-olds. Jenya Vincent from Tom Price took out first for girls 12 to 13, with Teagan Singer claiming first for 14 plus.

In the under-13 boys cruisers, Brady Kirkwood placed first, while the 14 to 29 cruisers title went to Paul Kerrison, with Rodney Gethin taking out the 30 plus. Macie Bennetts placed first for the 14 plus womens cruiser.

In the men's 14 plus pro open, Corey Davis placed first, with Catherine Hopkins of Hills BMX Club first in the women's division.

Event co-ordinator Sara McRobb said the night was a fantastic close to a fantastic series.

"All riders had a great night," she said.

"It is always great to see the sportsmanship and camaraderie that was displayed throughout the whole series."

More than 30 riders from Karratha, three riders from Hedland and 28 from Tom Price, will also head down to the BMX State championships in Kalgoorlie in the school holidays.
