February is an ideal time of year to brighten someone’s day with a random act of kindness, according to mental health organisation Act-Belong-Commit whose annual “feel good” campaign starts tomorrow.

Running in Karratha, Roebourne and Onslow for another year, Feel Good Feb encourages people to do random acts of kindness around their communities during February and share a photo or description of it on social media to promote positive mental health.

Act-Belong-Commit Pilbara health promotion co-ordinator Shelley-Anne Heelan said the campaign was a good way to boost positivity in the community after the often stressful festive season.

She said random acts of kindness were usually simple but had the power to “make a big difference in someone’s life” and improve the mental health of givers as well as recipients.

“You can buy a coffee for someone in the line behind you or you can make a small craft product and leave it somewhere ... for someone to pick up,” she said. “It can even just be volunteering, or putting a nice letter in your neighbour’s mailbox saying I really appreciate you — really anything that will bring a smile to someone’s face.”

Act-Belong-Commit Roebourne Aboriginal project manager Lesley Murray said Feel Good Feb was a good opportunity to recognise the community’s unsung heroes.

“We’ve got people who give and give and it’s just a way of life for them, they just do it, so it’s nice to have those champions acknowledged,” she said.
