Friday's all about swimming

CHRIS LEESPilbara News

Swimming is helping about 20 children from Karratha Senior High School’s Inclusive Learning Unit make new friends and develop their independence.

Every Friday since the start of term students from the junior and senior campus come together for an afternoon of swimming at Roebourne Aquatics Centre.

Unit co-ordinator Glen Carter said it was a good opportunity for everyone in the unit to get to know each other and create friendships.

“It is a good opportunity to continue on with our program of independent living skills,” he said.

Mr Carter said the students prepared their own lunches and organised all the gear they needed to go to the pool.

“It is just really another opportunity to get outside the classroom and get the kids to create some strong friendships amongst the group,” he said.

Mr Carter said it was important the students socialised with each other.

“These kids have come in from Year 8,” he said.

“It is a big jump for them from primary school.

“They are all probably a little shy and are a bit unsure how high school works.

" It is a good opportunity to get together and help each other out.”
