Fundraising lessons for children

Ebony SwetmanPilbara News

Karratha Primary School hosted its annual major fundraising event on Friday, September 20, by holding a relay for life, hosting a community barbecue and inviting parents into the classrooms.

Each year the school chooses one day to host an event aimed at fundraising, in an effort to involve students in the process of charity and teach them about contributing to their community.

Principal Mark Smyth said the day was about teaching kids there was more to learning at school than just the standard curriculum.

"It's our way of being citizens in the community," he said.

"It's not formally taught, but we actively talk to the kids about fundraising and why we do it."

In the morning students participated in a relay for life challenge, with games such as egg and spoon races and a three-legged race at designated stations.

They were sponsored by friends and family for each lap they completed of the relay or given direct donations.

Mr Smyth said the funds raised from last Friday's efforts would go towards cancer research, a cause close to the school's heart as one of its students is currently in Perth undergoing cancer treatment.

After the relay the school hosted a community barbecue, with parents and students bringing in a shared lunch.

The eventful day continued with a learning tour as students showed off their hard work throughout the year to their parents and carers.
