Girls academy brings basketball comp to Roebourne

The annual Roebourne Girls Academy basketball competition launched the Roebourne NAIDOC Week celebrations.

The day started with an amazing welcome to country by local elders which enabled all supporters, visiting teams and locals to feel a part of such an important week.

Nine teams in total competed in the girls and boys leagues over close to 14 games throughout the day. Visiting schools included St Luke’s and Yandeyarra.

There was a fantastic turnout from many local supporters in town coming down to cheer the many teams on to the finals, where Yandeyarra eventually came away with a well-deserved win in the girls’ league.

St Luke’s put up an amazing competition this year, ending up in the finals.

However, the boys’ team, coached by Beau McDonald, of V Swans, came away with the win.

Those attending the day were treated to amazing music from Nick and Hemi, who also educated kids about their smarter than smoking campaign, while everyone was fed by the canteen run by Roebourne staff and students.

This day could not have happened without the Roebourne Girls Academy receiving a grant from the City of Karratha’s Quarterly Grant Scheme, in partnership with North West Shelf Project, which allowed the event to grow and deliver a great outcome.

Most valuable player for the girls was Shakaya Warrie, from Yandeyarra, while boys’ MVP was Dequarne Roberts, of Roebourne.
