Goalkicker brings skills from Sharks

The North Pilbara Football League's current lead goalkicker says the skills he learned during a stint with East Fremantle have been a boon for the Port Hedland Rovers this season.

Adam Waight moved to the Pilbara about two years ago for work and to support his family and is now sitting on top of the ladder with 33 goals under his belt, followed by the Kats' Rory Miller on 29 and Swans' Steele Viti on 28.

Waight said his time playing under coach Steve Malaxos had helped him sharpen his skills.

"I've been playing footy pretty much all through my junior years and went to East Fremantle in the Colts and then was under Steve Malaxos, Shane Woewodin and Chad Morrison when he was there," he said.

"But Malaxos and Neil Lester-Smith would probably be the biggest influences."

Waight said his strategy during games was simply to lead from the front and just hope the boys would kick the ball to him.

"I've also picked up a few tricks from East Fremantle, so I'm slowly trying to bring it in and teach the boys the same thing for the forward line," he said.

"Its been a good season so far.

"We lost a fair few players last year but we've actually gained quite a bit more."

Waight said he hoped to be in the Pilbara for four or five years.

"A long-haul would be nice - it's a good club and a good bunch of blokes," he said.

Rovers coach Greg Mastrangelo said Waight was a talented player and had an engine that just kept on running.

"He's one of those guys who you don't realise how many goals he's kicked until the end of the game," he said.

"You turn around and he's racked up half-a-dozen, easy."
