Hedland anglers strike it rich

MARK SCOTTPilbara News

Two Hedland fishermen are $4000 richer after taking out Mystery Length prizes in this year’s Pirtek Fishing Challenge.

Izzy Kalzee caught a 33.6cm yellowfin bream at Finucane Island on the day of the competition, chancing on the mystery length for bream caught across WA.

Kalzee said he hadn’t planned on entering until his mother-inlaw purchased him a shirt which came with information about the competition.

“It turned out pretty well I guess, now I’ve got some money to spend fixing my boat and buying some new fishing gear,” he said.

Another Hedland man, Dean Skennar, won the Mystery Length prize for golden trevally with his 58.6cm fish, which snared him $4000.

The competition attracted 6500 entrants Australia-wide, raising $130,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Another $130,000 was shared in cash and prizes across the country. Event organiser Michael Guest thanked anglers who participated in the competition.

“We had thousands of fishos all casting a line on the same day and some terrific fish were caught and released right across the country,” he said.

“This is allowing us to continue our goal of raising funds and awareness of Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.”
