Karratha in touch to win again

JESSICA BUCKLEYPilbara News

Next weekend the Karratha team will head down to Perth to defend their title of WA’s open mixed touch football champions.

Having won the title by defeating seven teams last year, Karratha will have to work twice as hard to secure a victory in a division that has doubled in size.

The team of 16 — seven women and nine men — were recruited from the mixed men’s and women’s competitions the Karratha Touch Football Association ran last year.

With an unofficial international victory in the Malaysian Cup last June, the team is hoping for an official victory in the State Championships.

While the team was undefeated throughout the Cup, the side was not able to be named the official champions because they were not representing an Asian country.

Despite their success in Malaysia, the team have amped up training to ensure they are prepared for the tough competition they expect to face in Perth.

With the competition only two weeks away, the close-knit team is eager to get to get to Perth and play as a unit.

Karratha player Kate Pratt said the team was pretty much a family.

“When you have a great social atmosphere your team is going to perform better because you have the drive and determination to work a bit harder for your mates,” she said.

Pratt is a veteran, having represented WA in the National Touch League several times.
