Karratha radio host seeks world record
A Karratha radio jock is pitting his skills against the world, as each week he attempts to break or equal a Guinness World Record.
Spirit 1260 Breakfast radio presenter Pablo Newton Farley is taking on a challenge every Wednesday until the end of the year, trying to break a record and beat radio staff members who take turns competing in the segment.
Pablo said he was personally targeting world record holder Ashrita Furman who in 2012 had set 148 records.
"I want to take one of his," he said.
So far there have been four record attempts, however the first three were none too successful.
In the first week Pablo attempted to put on as many T-shirts as he could in a single minute.
Aiming to shove on 31, he clocked out at 10.
The second week left a sour taste in Pablo's mouth as he tried to shove a lemon down his gob in less than eight seconds.
Although the records seem easy enough, Pablo said this was far from the case.
After the sour-tasting failure, the next week Pablo and the Spirit radio gang tried to catch tennis balls while wearing boxing gloves given to station manager Jude Chapman by WA boxer Danny Green, however their punt was also unsuccessful.
Nil from three, the latest challenge was more suited to Pablo's skill set as an avid basketball player. Going up against Spirit's Angie Ayers, he joined her in an effort to shoot a basketball through a hoop from the halfway line on the court while hula hooping.
Ms Ayers got the ball rolling when she managed to hula hoop and score from the free-throw line.
Meanwhile Pablo had about 37 cracks from the halfway line before the improbable happened.
Gyrating the hoop and then with a big heave Pablo unofficially equalled the record.
He said the station had not pressed record on its video camera so there was only an audio recording of his on-court performance.
"It's good to know if this radio gig dries up I can turn to touring WA hula hooping and shooting a basketball in packed out gyms. It's not a skill that I knew I possessed," he said.
One from four isn't bad, but Pablo is aiming to topple a lot more records over the course of the year.
Pablo said the team was after suggestions for what records he should try next.
"If you have a record for us that you'd like to suggest, please feel free," he said.
