Several Karratha schools took the opportunity to commemorate Anzac Day early this year, before breaking for the school holidays.

Baynton West Primary held their official Anzac ceremony on Thursday, April 7, where Army Warrant Officer Class 2 Simon Rossini was a guest speaker and Karratha seniors were invited to attend.

It was followed by a discussion session where students asked seniors what life was like during wartime and quizzed Officer Rossini about his army work.

The day finished with local artist Jan Malkin describing to fascinated students the real-life stories behind a selection of her Anzac paintings.

Baynton West Primary teacher Kym Sheperdson said the day gave children the opportunity to learn about aspects of war they knew little about first-hand.

Karratha Senior High School also hosted a whole school morning service for Anzac Day on the last Thursday of term.

The flag in the quadrangle was lowered to half-mast for the event, local cadets performed a march in front of the school, and trumpet students played the last post before one minute’s silence was observed.
