Kids show off fresh idea

Onslow Primary School has done its bit to promote healthier eating by releasing a cookbook full of fresh recipe ideas inspired by the school’s kitchen garden.

The Onslow Kids Kitchen Garden Cookbook contains recipes for every kind of meal and occasion, and all can be made from the fruit and vegetables its student help grow on campus.

Chevron is the main funder of the garden and its Onslow community engagement manager Sam Rigg said being involved in the garden was rewarding for children and helped them learn across many different subjects.

“The Onslow Kids Kitchen Garden program enhances learning experiences at the school through tactile experiences and provides local kids with a chance to connect with and learn about nature, ” he said.

“All three of my children love their time in the garden and my partner volunteers there, assisting with growing seedlings and general gardening tasks.”

Mr Rigg said the cookbook was a source of pride for the children involved in the garden.

The cookbook launch on Thursday, November 19, saw students, parents and the Onslow community gather to test some of the book’s recipes.

Shire of Ashburton president Kerry White said Onslow Primary’s cookbook was the result of continuing community-wide interest in the garden.

“To have produced a book of such high calibre is a credit to everyone involved, ” she said.

The public can pick up a copy of the Onslow Kids Kitchen Garden Cookbook from Onslow Primary School or the Shire of Ashburton administration building.
