Dampier's Liam Pilgrim capped off a big year for 2011 last week after being named the top-performing Pilbara student in the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank.

As if getting dux of Karratha Senior High School and being awarded the Walkington Award and the Burrup Fertilisers Academic Excellence Award scholarship weren’t enough, Liam achieved an admission rank of 96.1.

This score puts him in the top 5 per cent of Year 12 students in the State.

Despite the high score, Liam said he wished he could have done better.

However, he was happy to get a high enough grade to get into medicine at UWA for this year.

“I stuffed up the exams,” he said.

“I didn’t go as well as I was planning, but I got enough to get into medicine.”

Liam is now looking forward to the year ahead at university in Perth.

“I can’t wait. It’s going to be awesome,” he said.

Liam was born in Derby, but moved to Dampier with his family when he was one.

He attended Dampier Primary School before completing high school education at Karratha Senior High School.

Liam said he would like to thank his parents for all their support throughout his schooling life and also his teachers.

In particular, he wanted to thank principals Greg Kelly and Jennifer McMahon at Karratha Senior High, as well as the rest of the staff there.

“Especially at Karratha High School, (the teachers) always try to provide the best for the students,” he said.
