Marine-inspired artist finds her happy place in Exmouth

Local artist Eleanor Killen has made the move south to Exmouth from Karratha to draw inspiration from the Ningaloo Reef.

Killen decided to relocate after travelling to Exmouth almost weekly to see friends, visit its white sandy beaches and immerse herself in the local art scene.

“Exmouth gives better inspiration as I can surf and fish and snorkel whenever I want to,” she said.

“Exmouth also has more of an art scene.

“Karratha definitely does with all the indigenous artists around — it’s fantastic for that.

“But I suppose for me personally, Exmouth was a much happier place to live.”

Killen draws a lot of inspiration from the landscape and fauna around her.

“I do love the ocean and I do a few terrestrial works, so plants and big trees,” she said.

“I’d love to do a few lizards, but I’m mainly marine focused at the moment.”

Killen divides her time between her art and working as a tour guide for Ningaloo Ecology Tours.

“It’s heaps of fun to pick up people on a bus and drive them out … and talk about the landscape and the animals ... then jump on a boat, look through the glass and do some snorkelling and drive back to town,” she said.
